In January of 1937 a number of young men of Stanley met and organized a volunteer fire department. Rufus Cave a local merchant and mechanic at Cave Bros in Stanley was elected the fire chief. 500 feet of hose and a reel were purchased and was stored in Wm. Robinson's garage. The young men were congratulated on organizing the fire company.

1937-1948 The Stanley Volunteer Fire Department only responded to calls in the Town of Stanley and assisted Luray or Shenandoah Fire Departments with the hose reel and hose that we had.

In 1948 the Stanley Volunteer Fire Department was officially organized with plans for the town's first fire engine. The department started responding to calls with its first fire engine and out of the Stanley Community Hall building.

John Morris 'Buss' Dunlap, Karl Jenkins Sr., Rufus Cave, are a few of the names that stand out in the organization of the department, all merchants of Stanley.
